Pair of semi-detached houses with walls adjoining. c1824-8,
with later additions and alterations. Probably designed by
John Forbes. Ashlar over brick, partly stuccoed at right, with
slate roofs, tall rebuilt brick party-wall stacks.
Double-depth plan with outer stairwells.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basements and with attics, 4
first-floor windows (2:2) with single-storey entrance bays set
back to sides and lower walls adjoining. Ashlar detailing
includes: first-floor band; crowning frieze and cornice with
blocking course and, to right, copings. Entrance bays and side
walls have moulded cornices. Ground and first floors have 6/6
sashes all in plain reveals, those to ground-floor in wider
elliptically-arched recesses. Basements have 3/6 sashes where
original; C20 door. Entrances: roll-edged steps to
4-raised-and-fielded-panel doors with overlights with
margin-lights; first-floor band continues over; low parapet
and copings. Attic roof dormers have casements. Further attic
casements to returns in flattened gable ends, with copings.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: coped walls to either side approx 2m high
and 1.5m long.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the street was originally known as
Montpellier Retreat. Forbes was architect and surveyor to the
Pittville Estate, 1835-6.
Walls abut No.5 (qv) to left and No.8 (qv) to right.
