House. c1850. For Revd JFS Gabb. Pinkish-brown brick in
Flemish bond with red brick dressings and slate roof, iron
verandah. Double-depth plan with central hallway.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows, with left return
of 2-storeys and basement, 4 first-floor windows. Main facade:
central entrance a C20 part-glazed door. 8/8 sashes
throughout, larger to ground floor, with louvred shutters.
Verandah to ground-floor has stick stanchions. Hipped roof. 3
stacks with cornices.
INTERIOR: open-well staircase has rod-on-bobbin balusters and
wreathed handrail; further staircase visible at rear. Marble
fireplaces to left room, otherwise not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Revd Gabb bought Balcarras House (qv) in
1844, and built Balcarras Court on the site of the old
stables.
