Public house. Probably C17, extended or remodelled mid C19.
MATERIALS: stucco with stucco detail; tarred slate roofs:
mansard roof at the front behind a balustraded parapet with an
entablature with architrave, widely-spaced modillions to
frieze and a heavy moulded cornice; 3 mansard dormers with
shallow curved roofs; brick end stacks over coped and shaped
gable ends; rear wing with steep roof at right angles to main
roof sweeping lower to its rear; large rubble lateral stack to
its front towards left and a gabled dormer window breaking the
eaves right of stack.
PLAN: overall L-shaped plan, the lower rear wing presumably
containing the hall of the original building.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic to front; slightly irregular
3-window range. Stucco detail includes: plinth and channelled
rustication to ground floor with entablature with moulded
cornice above, and rusticated quoins and moulded architraves
with segmental heads to upper floors. Mid C19 12-pane hornless
sashes. Ground floor has 2 similar but shorter 9-pane sashes
and 2 doorways: under left-hand windows and between
ground-floor windows towards right; C20 panelled and glazed
doors. Right-hand return, including front of rear wing, has
similar stucco detail and similar mid C19 sashes, and there is
another similar sash to 1st floor of rear gable end.
INTERIOR: not inspected but former list description notes
remains of C18 dog-leg staircase with closed string, moulded
handrail and Chinoiserie balustrade.
