GV II
Swing footbridge. 1862. Designed and manufactured by Henry
Grissell (a renowned ironmaster). Relocated here in mid C20
from the Surrey entrance basin. A distinctive
stayed-cantilever design (unusual in metal bridges) with
arched span in wrought-iron, stayed by iron rods to cast-iron
counterweight. Hand operating gear remains, although an oil
hydraulic mechanism added in 1980s.
