Dolphin House

GV II


House with shop premises. Circa C16 or early C17, remodelled and extended circa C18/19. Stone rubble, rendered at front. Clay plain tile roof. Brick gable-end stack.
PLAN: Long rectangular plan, now two rooms, with a gable-end stack at the right [W] end, and a circa C18 wing behind the the left end. Originally the range might have been open to its 4-bay roof.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window north front. C20 2 and 3-light casements with horizontal glazing bars only. Ground floor C20 shop fronts with glazing bars, and fascia over. C20 doors. At rear [S] gable-ended wing to right and outshuts behind main range to left.
INTERIOR: Right-hand room has unchamfered cross-beam and stone fireplace in corner with chamfered cambered timber bressumer without stops. Left-hand room cross-beams boxed in. 4-bay roof [lightly smoke-blackened], three trusses with cambered morticed collars, morticed apex with diagonally -set trenched ridgepiece and trenched purlins; purlins and common rafters mostly missing. Truss at west end replaced circa late C19.
