636-1/50/474 Monument to Henry Daniel, Nunhead
Cemetery
GV II
Momument. c1867. To Henry Daniel, d.1867. Stone. Located in
Section D, just to the west of the chapel (qv), and along a
main path. A heavily swathed vestal figure stands upon a
garlanded base with cherubs heads set at the corners. This
collection of motifs is in turn supported by plinth with
inverted torches at the angles (repeating those on the
entrance gate piers). The vault plot is delineated with
Grecian scrolled borders and honeysuckle ornament.
Henry Daniel was mason to the London Cemetery Company which
owned and ran Nunhead Cemetery and had workshops opposite the
entrances to Nunhead and Highgate Cemeteries. His monument is
an opulent concoction which can be read as a posthumous
advertisement of his artistic skills.
