Dulwich Grove United Reformed Church
and Church Hall
II
Congregational church. Dated 1889, By James Cubitt. Hall of
c1890. Red brick in English bond with stone dressings and
roofs of slate and tile. Gothic Revival style.
PLAN: nave of single bay with organ bay to ritual west and
pair of transepts to each return elevation; the latter
galleried; porches with pitched and lean-to roofs flanking the
main gable end, and entrance elevation, to East Dulwich Grove.
EXTERIOR: traceried roundel to ritual west end with trio of
windows below, the range flanked by setback buttresses; blind
tracery to gable peak. Brick and stone bellcote several metres
from gable peak, on roof ridge; tall broached spirelet to
metal cross.
INTERIOR: west gallery with organ of late C19 or early C20
date, its bay demarcated by a segmental pointed arch. Narrow
bays at west and east ends of the nave; centre of nave treated
as a single bay, spanned to the transepts by an exceptionally
broad, flattened segmental pointed arch. This long span is an
unusual and noteworthy feature, and made from wood. Boarded
ceiling. Wood roofs to transepts. Dais at ritual east, the
'chancel arch' removed subsequent to war damage.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: linked to the church by a low brick range
is a gable-facing church hall, the main gable end with a trio
of stepped lancets. The interior has been much altered.
