Lady Well

Holy well. Probably medieval, but the superstructure looks no
older than C17; restored 1984. Consists of a small oblong
trough of water, filled from a source that cannot be seen from
outside. Stone barrel-vault above it. Superstructure consists
of a stone rubble wall with some red brick. At its base is a
semicircular chamfered opening with dressed stone voussoirs;
this gives access to the well and is closed by a C20 grille.
Above it is a slate plaque in a chamfered stone frame with
rounded top corner. The plaque is inscribed: 'The Ancient
LADYWELL restored Anno Domini MCMLXXXIV. I. KERR. Mason.'
HISTORICAL NOTE: the well is included among Theo Brown's 'Holy
and Notable Wells of Devon'. She describes it as a dripping
well; 'water diverted from a near-by spring into a sink in
wall'. Nothing appears to be known about its early history.
