Small country house, now used as school. Late C18, remodelled
and extended early C19 and entrance front extended late C20.
Rendered or stuccoed walls; dry slate roofs, hipped behind
moulded parapet to main block and gabled to service wing;
rendered stacks. Double-depth plan with central stair hall and
service wing to rear left.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 5-window entrance front to
(south) elevation which has 4 Tuscan columns of former porch
built forward in front of central bays; shallow cambered
arches over early C19 hornless sashes with thin glazing bars
and margin panes; shaped shutter boxes to three 1st-floor
openings and louvered shutters to 3 openings. Mid-floor string
course continued to 2:1:2-bay principal garden front with
projecting central bay and similar sashes plus central French
windows to ground floor.
Service wing has gabled 2-window range to left of entrance
front with original 12-pane sashes and pyramidal-roofed
louvered bellcote.
INTERIOR: retains its fine original features where inspected
including: open-well staircase with ramped mahogany handrail
over stick balusters on open string, with wreathed newel; oak
panelled doors within moulded architraves; moulded cornices to
reception rooms, left-hand room of garden front with dentilled
cornice and there are several good chimneypieces.
HISTORY: formerly known as Howden Court and shown on a map of
1801.
