Country house. C18 origins, remodelled early C19, on site of
earlier house. Stucco with moulded plinth and mid-floor
string; dry slate hipped roof with wide eaves carried on
brackets; rendered stacks over the hips and over other cross
walls; many octagonal clay pots; cast-iron ogee gutters.
PLAN: double-depth plan with large central entrance hall and
large stair hall linked to axial passage right through the
house, plus lower service wing at rear right, and early C20
ballroom at rear left.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; regular 1:2:1 window entrance and garden
front with 2-storey bowed windows to end bays and 3-bay
round-arched loggia to ground floor between. Original hornless
sashes with glazing bars. 2:4-window range left-hand return
has single-storey ballroom on the left and original garden
front on the right with alternate single and tripartite
sashes; verandah with ramped glazed and part leaded roof to
ground floor. 4:2-window range right-hand return is entrance
front with pedimented doorway under left-hand window of
service wing; 4-pane overlight and 6-panel door.
INTERIOR: has good original features where inspected: stair
hall has plaster barrel vault, plus lantern, over open-well
staircase to balcony with curved ends; cast-iron balustrade
with anthemion balusters over an open string. Left of the
stair hall is a small plaster-vaulted oval vestibule, left of
this an entrance hall with moulded plaster ceiling cornice. In
front of the stair hall, and linked to it by 3 doorways, is a
large entrance hall with moulded plaster ceiling cornice.
The flanking reception rooms have early C19 plaster bands with
trailing vine over moulded cornices with egg and dart
enrichment, and central acanthus roses, the rose to the room
on the right with a guilloche border.
Room behind small entrance hall has similar ceiling cornice.
All the doorways have moulded architraves and 6-panel doors,
most with fielded panels and there are panelled window
shutters.
Various old or original chimneypieces include good marble
chimneypiece to left-hand room.
HISTORY: Bolham House was once the home of Sir Walter Raleigh,
later it was the home of the Amorys, until they moved to the
newly-built Knightshayes Court (qv).
