Public house. Reported to date from 1726 (opening of Avon
Navigation) with mid C19 and late C20 alterations and
additions. Squared and coursed rubble with ashlar dressings,
copings and single-Roman tile roof with gable end brick
stacks.
PLAN: 3-unit plan with C19 extensions to rear either side of
staircase tower under catslide roofs and late C20 extension to
east.
EXTERIOR: symmetrical south front to River Avon with central
doorway, continuous string course over ground-floor windows,
cruciform metal braces under eaves and gabled roof. All
windows are mid C19 plate-glass sashes with horns in
edge-moulded architraves; 2 roof dormers with late C20
top-opening casements and one roof-light. Bolection-moulded
architrave to doorway with flat hood on brackets; part-glazed
late C20 door. Staircase tower to rear has 2-light mullion
window with casements and hipped roof.
INTERIOR: early C18 inglenook fireplace to ground-floor
right-hand front room; further fireplace to ground-floor
left-hand front room.
HISTORICAL NOTE: wooden surround to fireplace in left-hand
room has holes made by hot pokers by newly-promoted barge
captains who then stood rounds of drinks.
FURTHER INFORMATION: the inn is situated adjacent to Saltford
Lock on the River Avon.
