Church. 1882. By FW Hunt of London. Common brick in English
bond, slate roofs. Early English style.
PLAN: nave and chancel in one tall vessel, with north-west
bell-turret, north and south aisles with porches at west ends,
chapel at east end of north aisle, vestry and organ house near
east end of south aisle.
EXTERIOR: the aisles are buttressed but windowless; the gabled
porches each have coupled square-headed doorways in a blank
arch with patterned brick tympanum, and brick gable copings
with kneelers. The nave has a brick corbel table, and short
2-centred arched clerestory windows in 3 pairs plus a single
window at the east end, all with 2 short arched lights and a
roundel, and geometric leaded stained glass; the south side
has a tall gabled vestry-cum-organ-house with an outshut to
the east, stepped gable coping, a segmental-headed doorway,
small lancet windows and 2 circular windows; the west gable
wall has 2 tall 2-light lancet windows with simple arched
tracery, the east gable wall has 3 similar windows, each has
an oculus in the gable, the north-west corner has a square
turret carrying a wooden-framed belfry which has a tall
pyramidal cap with simple lucarnes and a weather vane finial
and the others have drum pinnacles.
INTERIOR: 3-bay aisle arcades of wide 2-centred brick arches
carried on short cylindrical columns with crocketed caps; roof
of slender queen-strut trusses carried right through to
chancel, which is divided from nave only by 3 steps up and a
good carved wooden screen; chancel with piscina and sedilia,
carved choir stalls, wooden altar with carved panels.
