The Swan and Railway Hotel

GV II

Hotel, now public house. 1898, by WEV Crompton. Red brick in
Flemish bond with matching terracotta dressings including
square tiling to ground floor; green slate roof. Narrow
rectangular plan at right-angles to street. Scottish baronial
style.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic, a 2-window facade, with two
2-storey semi-circular oriels to the upper floors, a
modillioned cornice and coupled attic gables. The ground floor
has a wide square-headed doorway offset left and flanked by
2-light windows, that to the right with a narrower doorway
immediately to its right, all these openings with moulded
eared surrounds and large overlights with stained glass. The
upper floors have 5-light mullioned windows (3 lights in the
oriels), those at 1st floor transomed, and pairs of
round-headed lancets in the gables separated by Art Nouveau
shafts rising to apex finials. Small-paned glazing to the
windows.
INTERIOR: original features including mosaic floor to porch
lettered "Swan & Railway"; entrance passage and rear hall with
foliated glazed wall-tiles; lounge to left of entrance
passage, servery to bar of vault to right, panelled and
stained glass screens to bar and original settle seating in
both these rooms.
