Cow Dub Farmhouse and attached barn
GV II
Farmhouse with attached barn. Probably late C17 or early C18,
with C18 addition; altered. House of random rubble with
quoins, the front and rear painted white and the west gable
tarred, barn of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, both
with graduated stone slate roofs except west slope of wing to
house which is blue slate. Irregular plan composed of 2-unit
house on east-west axis with broad gabled wing to north side
of 2nd unit, barn attached to east end and carried round into
re-entrant angle of house (under catslide roof).
EXTERIOR: the house is 2 storeys with a 1-window entrance
front in the gable of the wing, which has a square-headed
doorway offset left, an oblong window to the right of this
with altered glazing and a 4-pane sash at 1st floor. Gable
chimney to right, ridge chimney at junction with barn to left.
The barn to the left, single-storey under a catslide roof, has
a wagon doorway in the centre with a wooden lintel and C19
harr-hung doors, a square window to the left and a small
1-light window to the right. At the west (right-hand) end
there is a lean-to coalhouse in the angle of the wing and
another lean-to attached to the west gable. The 3-window south
front has a square-headed doorway offset left, a square window
left of this, 2 rectangular windows to the right, similar
rectangular windows to left and right at 1st floor and a small
square window offset right between these; all these windows
with altered glazing. South side of barn has wide lean-to
porch.
INTERIOR: housepart in west bay has boxed beams and wooden
under-drawn ceiling; spiral staircase in front left corner of
wing, and next to this an old plank door with strap hinges.
Forms group with Sportsman's Inn approx. 10m north (qv).
