Barn approx. 50m south-east of Combe

Barn, part probably formerly a dwelling house. Probably later
C17 or early C18 altered and remodelled in later C18.
Roughly-coursed blue ragstone rubble with some sandstone,
quoins of both materials, stone slate roof. Linear plan on
north-south axis, built at right-angles to slope in 2 unequal
portions, of which the longer and narrower southern portion
(up the slope) is the former dwelling. This is 2 low storeys,
facing west, now with only one window at 1st floor but with
the base of a corbelled chimney at the south gable; it now has
a square-headed wagon entrance abutting the barn to the left,
with a wooden lintel and damaged board doors, and to the right
of this 3 large rectangular lintels to blocked openings which
appear to have been a doorway, a window and a fire-window, all
with remains of stone-slate drip-courses over them; and above
and between the latter a rectangular window lacking joinery.
The barn continued to the south, which projects to front and
rear, has coupled doorways of unequal height with a
drip-course over them, and a course of through-stones higher
up. The rear has one small blocked 1-light window
approximately opposite the former doorway at the front.
INTERIOR: recessed flue of former chimney with corbels at the
top slightly smoke-blackened; C18 roof trusses in barn but C20
roof trusses in domestic portion. History not known, but may
be remains of longhouse which preceded the present Combe
House. Forms group with Combe House (qv).
