14/06/84 Allen Haw and barn adjoining at east
end
GV II
Farmhouse and attached barn, now house. Early C18, slightly
altered. Roughly coursed sandstone rubble, the house
white-washed; stone slate roof. Single-depth 2-unit plan on
east-west axis, facing south, with a staircase outshut to the
rear, and the barn continued at the east end (later lean-to at
west end not of special interest).
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and 2 windows, almost symmetrical, with a
stone slate drip-course over the ground floor interrupted in
the centre by a gabled porch; a large oblong fixed window of
40 small panes to the left, with opening panes in the top
corners, a square 20-pane fixed window above this with one
opening pane in the top left corner, and a similar but smaller
window on each floor to the right (the upper altered as a
casement but retaining the small panes). Square extruded
chimney at left gable, ridge chimney at junction with barn to
right. The barn, a longer range on higher ground but otherwise
continuous with the house, has a wagon doorway offset left of
centre and a doorway to the left abutting the junction with
the house. Rear: outshut continuous with barn; narrow
stair-window near west end of outshut, small square 2-light
casement to left and below this (pantry), 1-light window at
1st floor above this, and a recently-added gabled porch to the
added lean-to; doorway to barn abutting junction with house,
with board door, and loading door immediately above.
INTERIOR: housepart to left has lateral beam, large C18
rectangular fireplace with corbelled lintel including a wide
false keystone, narrow built-in cupboard in opposite wall, and
stone staircase off rear corner (rebuilt steps).
