Upper Earnstrey Park

Farmhouse now house. C16 cross wing, C17 rebuilding, C18
alterations and extension. Early brick, rebuilt brick with
dentil course eaves to south, stone rubble to north cross wing
extension. Plain-tile roof. Central brick ridge stack in south
wing with 3 spurred shafts of early brick with C20 cap.
Projecting stepped brick eaves-stack to north cross-wing with
C20 spurred shafts.
PLAN: plan of main range aligned north-south with 2 added
cross wings at each end. North cross wing has C18 extension to
east.
EXTERIOR: 2 storey and attic. Front entrance to east side of
main range has lean-to extension set between 2 projecting
cross wing gables, with C20 boarded door with casement over.
To right; C18 stone extension of north cross wing with gable
and return wall with C20 casements with brick
segmental-arches. To left gable of south cross wing are
3-light mullioned windows on each floor with rendered-brick
mullions, window surrounds and hoodmould, with restored
leaded-lights. South cross wing left return side rebuilt with
dentil course eaves and 3-light casement with brick
segmental-arch at ground floor. Rear of main range and cross
wings with, to right a 2-window range of large 3-light
casements with the ground-floor opening to right bricked-up
and part replaced with C20 projecting tiled gabled brick
porch. 2 C17 bricked-up former windows flanked by C20 windows;
2 C20 dormers. To left is gable end of north cross wing with
one 5-light mullion and transom window to ground and first
floors, and a single-mullion window to attic floor. Window
mullions and surrounds formed of rendered brick with simple
brick hoodmoulds with that at first floor extended as string
course across gable. Return side of north cross wing masked by
C20 single-storey extensions.
INTERIOR: south cross wing has C18 fireplace flanked by
wainscotting incorporating C17 panelling. Main range of 2 bays
has square-panelled partition framing at first floor. North
cross wing has deep chamfered bridging beams with
ogee-chamfer-stops. North cross wing and main range re-roofed
in C17 with double trenched purlin roof and 3 twin
raking-strut and collar trusses and incorporating 2 trusses of
C16 in north wing. C16 truss to east is double collar truss
with close-set vertical struts part-framing former gable end
window. C16 truss to east is now encased in gable end
brickwork, of close-set vertical struts incorporating framed
gable window.
Upper Earnstrey Park, together with Crowleaseowes, Middleton,
Bitterley (qv) forms the earliest examples of the use of brick
construction in the district.
