Farmhouse. C16 and C18. Timber frame with brick infill, and
brick. Plain-tile roof. 2 large projecting brick stacks on
east side with 3 spurred shafts to south stack and 6 to the
north, both with later linking capping. 3 bays with
cross-gabled central bay and C18 extension bay to south, and
single-storey service wing to east.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey and attic and cellar. North gable with
square framing 3 panels high per storey with tension brace at
ground level. Gable has jettied straight tie beam on brackets
much restored, and raking struts above and below collar. Lower
framing interrupted by C19 casement. C20 casement at first and
attic floors. Single-storey extension to left with brick
segmental-arched openings, with lean-to entrance extension.
West return side: to left is square framing at first floor,
small straight brace. Ground floor underbuilt in C18. Central
advanced gable with jettied gable-truss with chamfered
cambered tie beam, and raking struts above and below collar
with vertical struts framing C18 timber mullion window. Gable
underbuilt in C20 with brick. To right is C18 brick wing on
rubble plinth with brick storey bands and 2 C19 and C20
casements in brick segmental-arched openings and with plain
doorcase with top-light.
South gable end: C18 brick with attic storey band and
brick-coped gables. C20 casements in altered brick
segmental-arched openings, attic casement being C19 2-light
casement with top-lights.
East side: left-hand side covered by large brick stack and by
stair tower outshut partly underbuilt with C18 and C19 brick,
retaining jowled corner posts with some square framing and
east truss of cambered tie beam, interrupted principals,
vertical struts and rail. In centre is square framing and
framed jettied gable-truss with chamfered tie beam on brackets
and wall plate, swept raking struts, vertical struts and
collar. Gable covered at lower levels by projecting service
wing and partly covered to right by large brick stack. To
right is square framing to ground level with small straight
brace at wall-plate.
INTERIOR: framed bays have double bridging beams on all
floors, chamfered with ogee chamfer stops. Ground floor has
C17 moulded plaster cornice.
First-floor north bay has chamfered door opening, central bay
has hinged floorboard opening to priest hole adjacent to brick
stack, and arched mantelbeam with chamfered soffit. Double
trenched-purlin roof with single tenoned-purlin central
linking bay and single trenched-purlin roofs to east and west
gables. 2 internal trusses of high collar, twin posts
interrupting tie beam. South truss, now internal, same as
north gable-end truss but with wattle and daub panels
surviving. Possible second priest hole next to chimney.
Stair turret has oak newel winder staircase.
Cellar has lateral square-framed partition with stave and daub
infill.
Large fireplace with long large chamfered mantelbeam with
run-out stops. Vestiges of ashlar in cellar walls and recessed
stone arch indicating earlier building on the site.
