Row house with shop. Facade dated 1885, but some earlier
fragments inside. Brick and terracotta, now all colourwashed,
hipped Welsh slate roof with ridge at right angles to road,
brick chimney stacks.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, single bay. Right-angle plan. Shop front
probably original, but doorway relocated from right to centre,
having fluted pilasters with lionhead capitals, very shallow
fascia and quasi-Jacobean cornice, 3 panels of leaded lights
with coloured glass over former main window and one over
doorway. First and second floors have square oriel unit in a
Jacobean style, in 1:3:1 lights with transom, on a moulded
lower sill with 4 brackets, and with a steep-pitched gablet
and a deep decorated frieze between windows matched by similar
panels in main wall. Jacobean style gable decoration into
which are worked initials WH and date 1885. Stack to the
right.
INTERIOR: shop much altered and original staircase removed,
but rear gable incorporates 12-pane sash window with thick
glazing bars, and front first-floor room has a C19 fireplace,
but dado panelling, especially under window, appears to be C17
material reused. Plain second floor, no access to roof.
A distinctive late C19 facade which, combined with the
evidence for C17 fabric has significant townscape and
historical value.
