Farmhouse. 1700-40 for Dr William Thomas (1680-1738).
Alterations and additions of early to mid C19. Brick laid to
Flemish bond with vitrified headers; renewed tile roof with
brick end stacks. L-plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Main facade to rear has plain plinth,
plat band and modillioned timber top cornice; rusticated brick
quoins. Entrance has overlight to half-glazed door. Windows
have rubbed brick flat arches and pegged wooden
cross-casements with small-paned metal glazing; some
rebuilding e.g. ground floor window heads.
Returns have blocked narrow window openings to 1st floor and
small attic lights.
Rear has modillioned brick cornice and windows with cross
casements, and some rebuilding to right of wing, which has
similar windows and one smaller segmental-headed window with
2-light small-paned casement in rebuilt section of wall.
Gable of wing has 2 cross-casements to each floor. Outer
return of wing has modillioned wooden cornice and entrance
with heavy pegged frame and small-paned overlight to plank
door; narrow transomed window above; C19 lean-to outshut to
right has return entrance with C20 door and segmental-headed
window with horizontally sliding sash and rear casements; 2
gabled dormers, probably C19, with small-paned casements.
INTERIOR: dog-leg staircase has square newels, turned
balusters and moulded handrail; flag floors; attic has
plastered walls and angled ceilings; some visible roof
structure of paired rafters with bridle joint and no ridge
piece.
HISTORY: Dr Thomas is notable as the continuer and editor of
Dugdale's Antiquities; the house was bought by James West in
1751, in whose family it has remained.
