BURRATOR RESERVOIR
Burrator Dam
II
Reservoir dam. 1893-8; by James Manserch and Edward Sandeman, engineers; 1923-8 raised by 10ft. Concrete construction, faced in rusticated rock-faced granite. The outer [air] wall has extreme batter at its base. Above, at the centre a 5-bay arcaded weir spillway with battered bases to its piers and imposts to segmental arches. Rusticated stringcourses and coping to the parapets, the coping raised over the weir spillway; carriageway over the top of the dam with similar parapet on the reservoir side. Abutments have curved splays.
NOTE: Burrator Reservoir is supplied by the River Meavy and serves the City of Plymouth and Devonport. It held 657 million gallons of water and the capacity was increased to 1026 million gallons in 1923-8 when the dam was raised. It was the first substantial dam built in the South West of England.
