Description

BRIGHTON

TQ3004SW MONTPELIER ROAD
577-1/38/545 (West side)
01/03/88 Pillar box at junction with Western
Road
(Formerly Listed as:
MONTPELIER STREET
Pillar Box)

II

Pillar box. 1859. Made by Cochrane and Company of Dudley.
Cast-iron. Cylindrical pillar on moulded base with 2 ring
mouldings at the level of the horizontal posting aperture, and
coved cornice; shallow stepped and domed top decorated with a
pattern of segments and a central circle. This is a very rare
pillar box of large First National standard type, thought to
be the only one of its type remaining in postal service; it is
remarkable for having no Royal cipher or legend to connect it
with the post office.
