Hotel. c1818 with later additions and alterations.
Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades and hipped
Welsh slate roof with ridge stacks. Neo-Classical style.
EXTERIOR: 2 and 3 storeys with attics, 4 bays, the fourth is
wider and of 2 storeys. Chamfered plinth, quoins to ground
floor to ends and double set of quoins between 3rd. and 4th.
bays surmounted by Tuscan pilasters to first floor.
First-floor band. 6/6 sashes to first and 3rd. bays, 6/6 sash
to 2nd. bay, and tripartite sash of 6/6 sash between 2/2
sashes with apron below and framed panel above. Second floor
has 6/6 sashes to 1st. and 3rd. bays and 3/6 sash between, all
with sills. Continuous frieze, cornice and low parapet.
Ground floor: 3 steps to entrance in second bay a
4-fielded-panel door with fanlight in plain reveals and with
roll-moulded surround, cavetto-moulded round arch with central
keystone; part-fluted pilasters curve outwards to form
brackets supporting deep cornice. 2/2 sash, 1/1 sash and long
casement window, sills.
Right return of 3 storeys, 7 bays. Plinth, channelled
rustication to ground floor surmounted by Tuscan pilasters to
first and second floors between first and second, third and
fourth, and fifth and sixth bays. First and second floors have
6/6 sashes with sills and flat arches with keystones, those to
first floor with aprons. Frieze, cornice and blocking course.
Ground floor: elliptical carriage arch with Gibbs surround
occupies bays 4 and 5. 8/8 sashes with sills. Roof lights to
attic. Left return of 3 storeys, 4 bays. Quoins and Tuscan
pilaster to right bay. First floor, right bay: band,
tripartite window with 6/6 sash between 2/2 sashes; otherwise
two 6/6, and 8/8 sashes with flat rusticated arches. Second
floor has tripartite sliding sash with centre of 12 panes
between 6 panes to right bay, otherwise two 3/6, and 6/6 sash
with flat rusticated arches. Ground floor has tripartite 1/1
sash.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Regent Street, originally known as Cross
Street, was laid out c1808-1814.
