Water catcher at TQ 3335 0978
II
Water catcher lying between the north boundary of Stanmer Park
Nurseries and the borough boundary. Approx 70 metres long and
approx 12 metres wide. Built in 1870-5 to the design of Thomas
Jones, estate foreman, and enlarged to the west in the 1890s.
Brick, cement and a mixture of tar and sand. The surface was
coated with tar and sand in the 1930s; it has with occasional
breaks acting as channels, a continuous gulley to one side and
a brick break, the boundary of the first build, approx 25
metres from the west; brick and cement tank at the east end,
to the full width of the catch and approx 1 metre deep, with
an overflow at the north-east corner and the remains of the
filter system to the south end. The catcher supplied water for
the internal plumbing of Stanmer House (qv) and to the estate
buildings; though it now lacks the surrounding walls of timber
construction and slate roof which carried water down onto its
face, it is listed as a rare technical feature.
