II
A cluster of several buildings now used by the Bishop Blaize public house, owned at present by the Whitbread Brewery. Main range and adjoining block to rear right date from late C17 to mid C18 with later extensions. Mass wall construction, painted and rendered, the main range blocked out; slate roof; brick chimney shafts with bands. Round ceramic pots, the majority with crowns. Some cast iron rainwater goods.
Exterior: 2 storeys plus basement and cellar. Rear right block is 3 storeys; boxed eaves. Asymmetrical 5-window front. Windows to the left block are right of centre. At ground floor level is a C20 plank door to the right with a 3-light small pane casement window to the left. At first floor level are two 2-light, small pane casement windows. Above to the left is a raking half dormer window with a 3-light small pane casement window. At ground floor level the building to the right has three small pane windows with the left and central ones having integral ventilation panels. At first floor level are two horned sash windows. The building abutting rear right of main range is painted brick, half-hipped to the left end. Brick chimney stack with band to right end; corrugated iron roof. Central C20 door with a C20 2-light high transom window either side. No windows above. Left return (parallel with front elevation of main range) has a single 2-light small pane window at first and at second floor levels. A hipped roof extension abuts main range at rear left. C20 plank door to right and C20 plank double doors to left. At first floor left is a 4-light small pane casement window; central 2-light small pane casement window and 12-pane hornless sash to the right.
INTERIOR: Only partially inspected. Late C17 cross beams in the main range with worn run-out stops and one worn scroll stop.
Building abutting rear right has an early C19 chimney piece at second floor level and a newel stair running from first to second floor levels.
Historical Note: present landlord claims that the Bishop Blaize is the oldest standing public house outside the city walls. The roof of the main range may be of historic interest.
