Post office. 1887. Stucco. Roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys over basement. 4-window range. Arcade of 2
bays supported by Tuscan pilasters in centre of ground-floor
elevation; this arcade pierced by 2 round-arched windows; arch
spandrels have inset panels edged with egg-and-dart moulding;
keystones are vermiculated. To either side near the end walls
a single bay of this centrepiece is repeated; the one of the
right is pierced by a round-arched window; entrance through
the one on the left, its tympanum plainly panelled. At the
corners are rusticated pilaster strips which rise the full
height of the elevation; there is a storey band between the
ground and first floors. The motif of the centrepiece flanked
by end units is repeated on the first floor, the arcades,
however, are blocked, and the Tuscan pilasters omitted. The
blocked windows are subordered, their tympana filled with
shell motifs. Along the storey band, encroaching on the lower
spandrels of the blocked windows is a plaque which bears the
words: "Kemp Town Post Office." At the top of the elevation
runs a plain entablature band with 4 pairs of console brackets
centred on the axes of the bays below. Parapet above, which
projects over the 4 lower bays slightly to form piers, each
topped by a ball finial.
INTERIOR: not inspected. Railings to area.
