GV II
Churchyard monument. Tomb to Richard, 2nd Earl of Mount Edgecumbe 1764 - 1839. Portland stone arca with pedimented cover with acroteria, on rectangular sarcophagus. Extensive traces of early layers of black paint. Epitaph reads in part: who during a great portion of his life chose this neighbourhood for a residence, and dying at Richmond desired that his mortal remains should not be borne to the distant tomb of his ancestors but be deposited in this churchyard. Let us hope that his immortal part mingles thus with rich and poor in that abode prepared by Christ alike for all who trust in him.' A good instance of archaeologically inspired late phase of Neo-classicism. (Catalogue No. 461)
