Ltd)
GV II
Fish processing and smoking factory. Early C20 with later
alterations. Yellow and red brick, rendered and colourwashed
to front and right return. Concrete tile roof to front, sheet
asbestos roof to rear and to smoking tower. Rectangular on
plan, with central smoking tower.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic. 5 first-floor openings to
street front. Entrance to right gable-end. Street front has 4
segmental-headed windows with glazing bars, 3 small
segmental-headed casements to right. 4 first-floor windows
similar to those on ground-floor but shorter, 3 with 4 panes,
one with 9 panes. Stepped eaves. Roof stack to right. Narrow
elongated central smoking tower rising from apex of roof, with
6 wooden louvred openings, brick gable ends.
Right return of main range has ground-floor sliding door to
left of centre. To left a blocked door with a first-floor
loading door above with a board door beneath a segmental arch
and a timber hoist arm. To right, a segmental-arched window.
To far right a vertical series of loading doors, the
ground-floor one blocked with an inserted 3-light window
beneath a timber lintel, the first-floor with a board door
beneath a segmental arch, and the second-floor with a narrower
board door with a stone sill. 3 first-floor windows, one with
4 panes, the others with 9 panes, all beneath segmental
arches. Small first-floor hatch to far right.
Rear has flat-roofed ground-floor addition with sliding board
door and 5 windows; 6 first-floor segmental-arched windows to
main range similar to front.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Included as the best and least altered example of a series of
fish processing and smoking factories built in Riby Street,
near Grimsby Fish Docks, in the late C19-early C20, when
Grimsby was one of the foremost fishing centres in the world.
Still in use. Forms an interesting comparison with the listed
smoking-houses within the docks in the square bounded by
Surtees Street, Brown Street and Sidebottom Street (qv).
