Graveyard memorial. c1895. Granite. Dwarf-walled tomb
enclosure with Celtic cross, approximately 3 metres tall,
carved in high relief. The front of the shaft has a loosely
repeating motif of realistically-carved serpents entwined
around groups of balls arranged as crosses, some of the
serpents with bones in their mouths. The left and right sides
of the shaft have interlace patterns. The cross-head has
interlace, decorated balls, serpents and pairs of pumas or
lions. Inscription at foot of shaft to Sir Henry Burnet, Kt,
1827-95, wife Sophia, 1833-95, daughter and son.
An unusual interpretation of the Celtic Cross tradition.
