Shops. Probably 1905, altered. By Kiddie & Co. Sandstone
ashlar, with glazed canopy and slated mansard roof. Classical
style. Rectangular block on corner site.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic; 4 bays. C20 shop fronts at
ground floor. The upper floors have giant pilasters with Greek
key caps, and a full entablature with dentilled cornice and
blocking course; each bay is filled by a large rectangular
window on each floor and a panelled apron between floors, and
the 2 windows at first floor of Nos 513 & 515 have stained
glass with some Art Nouveau characteristics. The roof has 4
pedimented 2-light dormers. 4-bay return to Bold Street in
matching style.
The canopy is not supported by cast-iron columns but suspended
on wrought-iron tie-rods attached to lion-mask fixings at
first-floor level; except for the portion attached to Nos 509
& 511 to the left (which has been altered) it has a fascia of
cast-iron intersecting arcading with wreaths and white glass
panels with painted lettering; and is canted round the corner
to the Bold Street facade.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Forms group with verandah attached to Nos 497-507 adjoining to
the left (qv), and with verandah attached to Nos 517-523 (qv)
on the opposite corner of Bold Street.
