Vicarage, now offices. 1848 by William Hollingsworth for the
Rev. FA Atwood, with additions of 1908 for the Rev. AA
Markham; later C20 additions and alterations. Red brick in
Flemish bond, part rendered to rear; Welsh slate roof.
U-shaped on plan, incorporating the original L-shaped house to
south and a later rebuilt and extended range to north.
EXTERIOR: east front of 2 storeys, 3-window range;
symmetrical, with a lower 2-storey, 2-window range to the
right. Ashlar-faced plinth. Entrance has step to Greek Doric
porch with fluted columns, entablature with triglyphs;
half-glazed panelled door and overlight with margin lights in
panelled reveal with pilastered surround. 6/6 sashes with
sills beneath cambered lintels. Section to right, slightly
recessed, has smaller similar sashes. Deep bracketed eaves.
Hipped roof. Ridge stacks and side-wall stacks with ashlar
caps. Left return forms 4-window range south garden front,
with 2-window range, single-storey 1908 addition to left, all
with similar windows and details to entrance front.
Rear of 1908 addition has 2 re-set medieval corbel heads and a
1908 stone plaque inscribed in latin, recording the Rev.
Markham's restorations and extensions. An outhouse attached to
the rear of the main range has another stone plaque inscribed
in latin, recording its erection for the Rev. Atwood in 1848
by W Hollingsworth, with a quotation from Psalm 127.
North side of north wing has 4-light mullioned casements with
leaded lights, and a pair of earlier 6/6 sashes.
INTERIOR: main range has an open-well staircase with turned
balusters, moulded cornices, ribbed panelled window shutters
and C19 and early C20 chimneypieces in main rooms.
