Eight terraced chambers. c1524 and c1609 with later alterations.
No.16: the rear of No.16 is now Nos 12 and 13 New Square (qv).
c1524 with later alterations. Brown brick. 4 storeys 5
windows. Central stair turret with modern buttresses and
rusticated stucco doorway with keystones and plain band above.
C16 and C17 projecting chimney-stacks rising through the whole
height of the building and modern, buttressed chimney turret
on north-east corner. Mostly late C17 and early C18 windows
with gauged brick flat arches (ground floor with segmental
arches) to slightly recessed sash windows with exposed boxing
and red brick dressings. Some with original glazing bars.
Parapets with small pointed gables.
No.17: formerly the site of the Tudor screens passage and
adjoining buttery, altered 1583 when a new passage was built
with chambers over it and over the old kitchen. Re-fronted and
position of passageway transposed with that of door during
1930s. Multi-coloured stock brick. 4 storeys 6 windows.
Rusticated stucco doorway with keys and plain band above. C20
four centred archway to passageway with moulded brick
architrave and Lombard frieze. Brick stack rising the whole
height of the building. Mostly C18 sash windows with segmental
arches and exposed boxing. Some early C19 tripartite windows.
Plain band at 3rd floor level. Parapet.
No.18: c1524 with later alterations. Brown brick to ground and
1st floor. 2nd and 3rd floors of jettied, half timbered
construction with cement rendering. Rendered parapet with
moulded band below and at 3rd floor level. 4 storeys 3
windows. Rusticated stucco doorway with keys and plain band
above. C18 sash windows with architraves to ground, 2nd and
3rd floor. Rear elevation to Hale Court jettied at 3rd floor
level and cement rendered.
No.19: c1524 with later alterations. Brown brick. 4 storeys. 2
windows, including 1 in octagonal stair turret. Rusticated
stucco doorway with keys and plain band above. Ground floor of
turret cement rendered. Mostly early C18 windows with gauged
brick segmental arches to slightly recessed sashes with
exposed boxing. Parapet, that of turret rebuilt with string
below.
No.20: c1524, formerly the Tudor kitchen range. Altered 1583
when chambers were built over the old kitchens. Only the
staircase turret with entrance and a 1 window return bay are
in the corner of Old Square. South elevation of 6 windows to
Hale Court now partly obscured by a C20 building. Brown brick.
Staircase turret with rusticated stucco doorway with keys and
plain band above. On 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors square-headed
2-light windows with stone dressings. Plain bands below the
parapet and at 4th floor level. Return bay with
segmental-arched windows with flush frames. Nos 21, 22 & 23:
c1609 with later alterations. Brown brick with tile roofs. 4
storeys. No.21, 2 windows; No.22, 3 windows; No.23, 5 windows.
No.21 with corner staircase turret with entrance, matched by
(rebuilt) turret of No.24. Rusticated stucco doorways with
keys and plain band above. Mostly early C18 windows with
gauged red brick segmental arches and dressings to slightly
recessed sashes with exposed boxing. Turret with 3
square-headed 2-light windows with stone dressings, 3 small
square-headed windows and 2 slits. Plain band below parapet.
Parapets with small pointed gables.
INTERIORS: not inspected but No.20 noted to contain the
blocked-up remains of the Tudor kitchen fireplaces and ovens.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached cast-iron railings with
pineapple finials.
