Public lavatories. 1897. By the London and North-Western
Railway. Below-ground structure, entirely tiled in green and
white wall tiles and chequered black and white floor tiles,
with three entrances above ground (two for gentlemen and one
for ladies) enclosed and denoted by cast-iron railings on low
tile walls, and cast-iron gates with overthrows. Cast iron
roof with thick glass lights. The gentlemen's lavatory a
symmetrical composition accessed at either end, with a lower
entrance and central arch, dividing two ranks each of eight
urinal stands with marble tops (Doulton's of London, Paris and
Paisley), seven closets and an attendant's office with
chamfered panelled doors and screens under decorative vents;
similar vents in the walls, circular vents by the cisterns.
The ladies' lavatory is simpler but has the same panelling,
doors and cast-iron vents; there are six cubicles and an
attendant's room, with a panelled section containing
handbasins. The actual lavatories and cisterns are modern.
