Dockyard wall. 1830-31, by Sir John Rennie Jnr, for the Victualling Board. Granite ashlar and limestone rubble. Extends approximately 120m SE and returns approximately 150m. Channelled rusticated granite wall extends for approximately 10m SE from the Main Gate (qv), then rubble with lacing course to meet the Rear Retaining Wall (qv) at the SE corner of the site. HISTORY: an imposing perimeter wall, with a single landward Main Gate, was an important part of the design of the Yard to prevent pilferage and the loss of stores. Forms an important group with the Main Gate. The Yard is one of the most remarkable and complete early C19 industrial complexes in the country, and a unique example of Neo-Classical planning of a state manufacturing site.
