2 blocks. Early C19 fronts to a timber-framed building. (No 4A is actually
an adjunct at the rear which is irrelevant to the present listing.) Left hand
block is lower. 3 storey. Colour-washed stucco. 2 3-light windows to upper
part, 2 panes high on 2nd end 4 panes high on 1st floor. Shop front on ground
floor of 2 windows and deeply recessed central glazed double door, all framed
with reeded pilasters, plain frieze and small coved capping.
Right hand block is higher. 3 storey. Colour-washed stucco with projecting
bands at 1st and 2nd floor levels. Moulded wood cornice and flat-pitched
hipped old tile roof. 2 windows with architrave frames flanking central 3-light
window with pilasters and small cornice to upper part. Similar 3-light central
window on ground floor, flanked by 2 doors. The right hand door - 6-panel,
flush type, with rectangular fanlight, 4 panes, in surround of architrave,
plain frieze and delicate dentilled cornice. Reeded doorhead. The left hand
door - 6-panel in deep reveal, with reeded doorhead and rectangular fanlight
of double central oval and curved scroll pattern with twist ornament at sides,
all wrought iron, in shallow porch of slender reeded wall pilasters and Doric
columns supporting entablature, with enriched fluted frieze and cornice with
feather ornament to bed mould.
All the listed buildings, with Nos 1 to 9 (consec) Lowndes Buildings, in Castle
Street (West Side) form a group.
