GV II*

House. C16 with considerable C18 alterations and C18-late C19 extensions to
rear. H shape plan. Red brick, plaintiled roof. 3 storeys. Fine symmetrical
late C18 facade with projecting wings: 9 window range, 2:5:2, inset sashes with
glazing bars, flat brick arches; early C18 doorway with panelled reveals,
broken pediment with dentils on engaged Tuscan columns, inset 6-panel door with
raised and fielded panels, semi-circular fanlight with glazing bars; wooden
modillion eaves cornice, hipped roof to wings. North wing with C16 fireplace
and roll-moulded beams; late C18 mahogany staircase with marquetry inlay to
stair end brackets, renewed balustrade; plaster frieze to ground floor rooms;
one room in south wing with good late C18 marble mantelpiece. Sandon, Suffolk
