1/8 Meadow Farmhouse
II
Former farmhouse. C16. 2 storeys: 3-cell lobby entrance plan. Timber-framed
and rendered, with a thatched roof. An internal chimney-stack with 3 attached
square chimneys, rebuilt with old bricks. 3-light cast iron casement windows:
those to the ground storey larger, with a cross-bar and replacement square
leading; old leaded panes to the upper storey. C20 enclosed, gabled porch
with plain bargeboards. Framing exposed inside: widely-spaced substantial
studs, main beams with 3" chamfer, considerable reconstruction of the
fireplaces. The service end of the house may have been divided into 2: the
ceiling has been replaced, but there are the remains of doorways with arched
spandrels, some fake. At the west end of the house there is a high, 7-light
window on the ground storey in the gable end wall, with hollow-chamfer
mouldings to the replacement mullions, and a corresponding window on the upper
floor with diamond mullion housings. On the front wall, a blocked 4-light
window with diamond mullions in situ. A newel stair to the front of the stack
within the lobby.
