Headstone. Circa 1821 to Rev. Charles Whitfield. Sandstone slab c. 1.2
metres high with shaped top. Low-relief urn above well-cut, but partly eroded,
inscription: 'Rev. Charles Whitfield, Pastor of the Baptist Congregation/of
this place/his immortal Spirit ascended to GOD/July 18 1821 in the 73 Year of
his Age/as A Friend as A Christian/And as A M... of the Gosple (sic)/He
conducted ..., uch a Manner/as justly to des... to enjoy/the most ...
Whitfield was minister at the time of the building of" the baptist chapel (q.v.)
and was a leader in the evangelical revival. Information from Geoffrey
