Sculpture. 1959 by William Turnbull, commissioned by the
London County Council. Bronze, c. five feet in length, on a
low plinth. The shape was cast from plaster into which
corrugated paper had been pressed. An abstract representation
of an eye, that has an organic fish-like quality also; it is
long, narrow and torpedo shaped. In the late 1950s blindness
became a theme in Turnbull's work. The fish-like form relates
to his early work; its position on a narrow plinth is also
pertinent to his later, totemic pieces. It is the only
publicly sited work by Turnbull, and a particularly successful
and thought-provoking piece.
