Girls school. 1881-83. By EA Ould. Brown brick with red
terracotta and stone dressings; red clay-tile roofs. Later
portions of the school buildings are not included in this
item. L-shaped; the south wing facing City Walls Road contains
the school hall, the north wing facing Bedward Row has dining
hall and kitchen in the first storey with smaller rooms above.
EXTERIOR: the west face has the gable of 2 storeys and attic
to the cross-wing and the main face of the school hall, all in
a richly-detailed Vernacular Revival manner, with leaded
windows mullioned in terracotta and transomed in stone, shaped
chimneys and an ornate steepled belfry. The hall has 3 windows
under stone-coped gables and, in the manner of the bay of a
Tudor hall, a crenellated projection with a 4-light window to
the hall and a 3-light window above; a terracotta figure of
Queen Victoria; a corbelled tourelle with tiled spire.
The north face to Bedward Row has a round-topped framed and
boarded door in a projecting bay; 5 horned sashes to the
dining-hall with glazing-bars removed from the lower leaves; 5
recessed horned sashes to rooms above the dining hall; a
3-light wood mullioned and transomed window above the door
with a 3-light leaded dormer casement above.
The east face of the school hall has a roof sweeping down over
a cloister of 3 arched brick bays with terracotta medallions
in the spandrels.
INTERIOR: the school hall is open to the roof, with 3
arch-braced trusses on massive posts, 3 dormer-gables to west,
purlins, valley-beams and rafters; inserted gallery.
