House. 1846. By Thomas Shaw. For WH Smith, sharebroker. Later
alterations. Coursed squared gritstone, ashlar details,
steeply-pitched slate roof with gable copings and heraldic
beasts at each apex. 2 storeys with attics, 3 bays to S facade
with a 4th bay set back on right, its gable facing E. Gothic
Revival style.
The 3-bay front has a central gabled porch with half-glazed
double doors in a moulded 4-centred arch, narrow window above.
Cambered arches to window lights. Left: square bay window, 4
lights with blocking course, 2-light window to 1st floor,
gablet above. Right: a 2-storey canted bay window of 4 lights,
narrow attic window in gable above. Inserted dormer windows.
Large ashlar stacks, pots removed, to left and right, rear of
ridge.
Rear: 3 bays, the central entrance bay projects, gabled bay
right, 2- and 3-light windows with small-paned frames, an
ashlar stack with 2 cylindrical flues above gable.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
The house was occupied by Thomas J Kendall, banker, in c1872.
