Formerly known as: Cambrian Public House NINEVEH ROAD Holbeck.
Public library, later health centre and public house. 1901. By
William Bakewell. Red brick faced in salt-glazed Burmantofts
terracotta, grey slate roof. A corner site on sloping ground,
2 storeys over basement, central tower with octagonal hipped
roof.
Complicated fenestration includes mullion windows to Nineveh
Road frontage flanked by wings with transoms, round-arched
windows flanking entrance porch with segmental pediment on
consoles, a large 4-light canted bay on corner flanked by
turret-like bays, all with small-pane frames. Banded and
moulded wall decoration includes Leeds coat of arms over
entrance, Art Nouveau plaques and scrolls, balustraded
parapet.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
William Bakewell designed several important buildings in
Leeds, including the 1899 extensions to the Tower Works, Globe
Road (qv). The Cambrian public house closed 1990.
