Dovecote attached to farm buildings at Manston Hall Farm

Dovecote. c1500 with C17 and early C19 and early C20
alterations. Coursed dressed stone and orange brick with stone
slate roof. Square plan, originally with pyramidal roof.
South, Manston Lane front has large quoins at base of wall.
Single central inserted opening with brick segment head, now
boarded.
Left return abuts later farmbuilding.
Right return, east gable wall blank with early C19 brick
gable, open at apex.
North wall, hidden by attached farmbuilding has doorway at
left.
INTERIOR: has rows of stone nest boxes to all the walls, the
north wall has had the upper boxes re-built in brick. Roof has
two early C20 wooden trusses with king posts and diagonal
queen struts.
This is a rare example of a late medieval dovecote.
