Public house. c1800. Painted ashlar, stone roof with coped
gable ends and end stacks. Plain stone eaves course.
2 storeys and attic. 3 windows wide. Sashes with glazing bars,
ground floor altered to modern casements. Central stone
doorway with pilasters and entablature and large overlight
with glazing bars. Round-headed attic windows in gable ends.
To left, set back, former stables: painted dressed stone,
stone roof with coped gable end, 2 storeys, 3 bays, 1st-floor
segmental-headed openings boarded up, ground-floor
round-headed doorway and round-arched window each side with
continuous impost band. All windows have large plain stone
sills.
Rear: the steep ground slope resulted in the building being
constructed over approx 6 round arches, some forming the
cellars. A straight flight of stone steps at left end gave
access to the front ground floor. Plain surrounds to wide
doorway far right (below former stables and probably providing
more stalls); the main block has a narrow entrance left, and
wide doorway right (access to cellars); 3 arched recesses left
have pins for external hinges, suggesting use as separate
store-rooms or cart shelters.
INTERIOR: replanned and refitted late C20.
