Retaining wall and blank gateway. Late C17 for Sir Christopher Hatton IV. Brick
wall, parts renewed with ashlar coping. Blank gateway of limestone ashlar forms
central feature. Blank arch with panelled back, rusticated pilasters and broken
pediment over. Flanking niches. Initials CH in spandrels of central arch. Base
of similar wall is attached at right angles to left. Forming retaining walls to
C17 raised walk. Owned by the Winchelsea estate, in guardianship of HMBCE. Kirby
Hall is scheduled as an ancient monument.
