White House Cottage
GV Grade II
House and cottage. Early C17 with later C17 additions, C18 and
C19 alterations (The White House undergoing renovation at time
of survey). Timber-framing, partially on stone plinth and with
cement-render covering; graduated and plain slate roofs.
Crosswing of 2 storeys with partial cellar and attic on left of
2-storey, 3-bay main range having outshuts to rear.
The White House occupies crosswing and bay 1 of main range.
Crosswing: coursed stone plinth; ground-floor window flanked by
small, square framing (restored); moulded corbels to slight
jetty. Upper floors each have central window; the framing
rendered over. Main range: gabled porch on right of window to
each floor. Rear of crosswing: exposed corner posts; close
studding to each side of external brick stack; exposed
principal-rafter truss and later framing showing raised eaves.
Left return: 3 bays with central door; framing rendered over.
Right return of crosswing: exposed framing beneath carved
bressumer; restored wooden mullioned window to 1st floor.
White House Cottage: gabled porch to left of two 2-light
casements to each floor. Large stack at eaves between bays 2 and
3; eaves of bay 3 set lower.
Interior of The White House: main range has relaid quarry-tile
floor, square framing to internal rear wall; transverse ceiling
beam with stopped chamfers; chamfered joists; fireplace backing
onto crosswing has wooden bressumer. Crosswing: in front room
a fragment of wall painting with Latin inscription. Rear room
has arched recess with early C19 fireplace having iron firebasket
in wooden surround with fluted keystone and triglyphs. Service
bells above cellar steps. Oak staircase with square newels. Oak
floor boards. Various boarded and panelled doors.
Interior of White House Cottage: square framing exposed in
internal rear wall and in party wall with The White House;
exposed wattle infill and principal rafter truss. 2 ground-floor
doorways into north end have elm frames, one with elm boarded
door. Oak ceiling beams and floor boards.
