5/19 The Old Cross

House, formerly inn. Late C17. Coursed squared limestone, slate roof, brick end
and ridge stacks. 2-unit plan. 2-storey, 3-window range. Central C20 door in
bolection moulded stone surround flanked by Tuscan columns not supporting frieze
and cornice above door, 2-light flat-faced stone mullion windows either side of
door with stone sills and surrounds, similar windows to first floor but with
casements and small rectangular window to first floor left with moulded stone
sill and plain stone jambs and lintel. 2 gabled roof dormers. C20 single-storey
semi-circular link at left end to attached barn, now converted and part of house
and 2-storey C19 extension to right with 3-light casement to ground floor and
2-light casement to first floor, both with timber lintels. Interior has ogee
stop-chamfered spine beams and some stop-chamfered joists, large open fireplace
with chamfered segmental stone arch and bread oven, and bolection moulded stone
corner fireplace. Said to have been an inn and called 'The George'.
