Prestwick Hall

House. 1815 by John Dobson. Tooled-and-margined ashlar with plinth. Scottish
slate roof. Greek Revival style. Square with lower 2-storey service wing
projecting to rear on left return and conservatory projecting to rear on
right. 2 storeys, 3 bays. 8 swept steps with side railings which are wreathed
around ashlar piers. 2-leaf, half-glazed door in recessed porch with Doric
antae and cornice. 12-pane margined sashes with moulded sills on ground floor.
1st floor sill band and 6-pane margined sashes. Cornice and blocking course.
Hipped roof with 2 large ridge stacks.
To rear: doorway into service wing has pedimented Doric entablature. Large
24-pane margined sash stair window.
Interior: Entrance hall; screen of 2 Doric columns. Cast iron balusters said
to have been brought from elsewhere. Plain stone door surrounds framed by
incised line ending Greek key patterns. Coffered ceiling with triglyph frieze.
Dining room: Ornate plaster ceiling with wreaths of vines and ivy; multi-
moulded frieze and cornice. White marble fireplace with round arch and keystone
carved with vines; vines in the spandrels also. 2 doorcases (one framing a
niche) with fluted pilasters, elaborate brackets, palmette friezes and enriched
cornices. This niche and the larger serving niche have elaborate Rococo-style
built-in tables. The serving niche has fluted surround and large built-in
mirror in frame of palmettes, gilded pelmet.
Sitting room has similar elaborate ceiling. Wood fireplace with frieze of
scrolls and shells.
Study has stone fireplace with colonettes and square dentil capitals; pedimented
lintel with acroteria; coat of arms in the pediment and foliage in the acroteria.
