15/163 Fenwick Tower
GV II
House. Medieval core, C17 house, enlarged and altered early C19. Squared
stone with Welsh slate roof. L-plan. 2 storeys, 3 bays. Central 6-panel door
in C19 wood porch. 16-pane sash windows. The right half of the facade has
much older thicker masonry; window jambs of this part have sections of double-
chamfered surround; also reveals cut straight through wall. Roof hipped on
right with corniced ridge and end stacks. Attached on right a single-storey,
2-bay early C18 shed with boarded door and small Yorkshire sash; very steeply-
pitched roof with reverse-stepped gables.
Right return has irregular openings. 6-panel door to left in recessed C17
surround with hoodmould. Right of this a C19 sash, then a blocked doorway with
similar surround. On the right a boarded battened door in ovolo-moulded wood
surround.
Gable end of rear wing has rough medieval masonry including the springing of a
vault, fragmentary remains of tower of Fenwick family mentioned in 1415 (cf.
farmbuildings).
