19/104 Aydon South Farmhouse

GV II

House. C17, east wing dated 1722 on doorhead, main block rebuilt late C18.
Main block squared stone, wings rubble with dressings; Welsh slate roofs, 2
brick stacks. L-plan. South elevation in 2 parts: main block 3 storeys, 2 bays;
flush-panelled door with 5-pane overlight on right; 16-pane sashes except for
8-pane sashes to 2nd floor. End stacks, the left rebuilt in brick. Lower east
wing to right: 2 storeys, 2 irregular bays; moulded 1st floor string. Renewed
6-pane sash in older doorway with flattened triangular head on right; C20
window to left. 16-pane sash and narrow 2-pane sash, both in stone surrounds,
above, with blocked mullioned window to left. C20 brick ridge stack. Right
return shows chamfered window, with old iron bars, in gable; set back to right,
end of outshut shows blocked 2-light mullioned window. Other similar windows
in north wing.

Interior: Moulded 1st floor ceiling beams in east wing, and roof showing
principal-rafter trusses and collars; ridge carried between overlapped ends of
principals. Thick (0.80 metre) rear wall of main block is probably part of
original house pre-dating addition of north wing in C17 and early C18 east wing.
